Pandemic Influenza (Flu)
Pandemic Flu is a human flu that causes a global outbreak, or pandemic, of serious illness. The disease can spread easily person to person because there is little to no immunity to this type of the flu. This type of the flu is different from seasonal flu, that we see annually, and avian flu.
- Seasonal or common flu is a respiratory illness that can be transmitted person to person. Most people have some immunity, and a vaccine is available.
- Avian or bird flu is caused by flu viruses that occur naturally among wild birds. H5N1 is deadly to domestic foul and can be transmitted from birds to humans. There is no human immunity and no vaccine is available.
The Georgia Division of Public Health is planning for a pandemic flu to better prepare Georgians for this type of disaster. Each county in the state has a Pandemic Flu Planning Committee that consists of fire, police, public health, city/county officials, along with the faith based and business community, and many others.
